How To Help Your Children To Enjoy Sports More

As a mum to two boys, I know just how important outdoor play is for regulating children’s mental health, as well as for expelling all that excess energy. Outdoor play is a huge part of childhood, so encouraging your child to enjoy sports is something that parents are often keen to do – but how can you help your child to enjoy sports more? In this article, I’m going to be sharing helpful advice on how you as a parent can help your children to enjoy sports more, so let’s get started.

Why are sports so beneficial for children?

Alongside the fact that physical activity is good for everyone, no matter what your age, there are still so many benefits for children playing sports. Young people participating in sports are likely to gain a lot of life experience and learn how to better cope with tricky situations when they’re older. As well as that, there’s also the social side to sporting activities. Playing alongside a team or club allows children to socialise with people that may attend different schools and have different ways of life; thus teaching kids how to become confident, well-adjusted adults.

As a mum, I have seen first hand the benefits that being part of a sports team has had on my child, but here are just a few advantages to playing sports that may interest you.

  • Participating in sports helps children to learn about the importance of rules
  • Playing sports teaches kids about self-discipline
  • Progression and achievements in sports helps to boost a child’s self-esteem and confidence
  • Sports help to teach children the importance of teamwork
  • Helps to prevent childhood obesity
  • Improves mental and physical well being.

How to help your child enjoy sports more: choosing the right sport for them.

As we know, all kids are different. Children form different experiences and have different interests based on said experiences, so when it comes to finding a sport that they’ll happily be involved in, you may need to try out more than one. When helping your child to find a sport they enjoy, you need to consider their passions.

If they love being in the water, they’re probably far more likely to enjoy swimming focused sports as opposed to playing football, so bear this in mind when discussing possible sporting clubs with your child.

Make sure they’ve got everything that they need in order to succeed.

Playing sports is about more than burning off excess energy and learning something new; it’s about self-esteem. By succeeding in sports and achieving goals, your child will become more confident in all areas of life and begin to believe that when they set their mind to something, they really can achieve it.

However, if you want your child to benefit from this, you need to ensure that you are setting them up for success. If you want to know how to help your child enjoy sports more, you need to make sure that they have the proper equipment necessary in order to reach their full potential. This means that if your child wants to play tennis, for example, you’re kitting them out with the right sized tennis racquets and appropriate footwear that support their ankles and feet during play.

Helping your children to overcome disappointment.

Unfortunately, disappointment is a part of all sporting activities. No matter how good your child or their team is, there’s always going to be a winner and a loser in competitive sporting events. Because of this, it is inevitable that your child will experience loss and disappointment. They may lose a match, or they may feel that they didn’t play to their full potential – this disappointment and upset can lead them to beat themselves up and maybe even decide that they no longer want to partake in their chosen sporting activity.

As a parent, understanding how you handle this is an important step if you want to learn how to help your children to enjoy sports more. It’s important that parents are gentle and allow their children to reflect upon their gameplay in their own time. Oftentimes kids will have a moment of introspection whereby they will look within themselves and consider what they could have done differently during a match or game. Although during this time children may be moody or distant, parents should still let their children know that they’re there for them when they’re ready to talk about it.

Final thoughts on how to help your children to enjoy sports more.

Playing sports is a hugely beneficial thing for children to get involved with and has numerous advantages that help them to regulate both their physical and mental needs. Children will face challenges when participating in sporting events and they’re going to experience the highs and lows as they play competitively or judge their own performances. In order to help them to continue to enjoy playing sports, it’s important for parents to provide the proper equipment and gear, as well as adequate time for children to process the complex feelings that come with disappointment and grief. Allowing your child to come to conclusions on their own time and make up their own minds about the type of activity they partake in will allow your child to feel that they have more control over their lives and therefore help them to enjoy their chosen activity far more than they would if they felt forced or pressured into playing.
