If you’re considering moving to Canada from another country, you may wonder – what is life really like in the Great White North?
Etiquette, food, new languages…there is so much to think about when moving to a new country, and a lot of that depends on where you’re coming from. But, if Canada is your end destination, you won’t be sorry. Living here has its drawbacks, of course, but overall, the country has so much to offer its citizens, including amazing picturesque towns, stunning viewpoints, and great diversity. Here are a few things to expect as you acclimate to Canadian culture.
Language
For those who don’t know, Canada has two nationally-recognized official languages, and those are English and French. If you’re moving to Canada from an English- or French-speaking country, you’ll certainly have an easier time getting acclimated, however Québec is the only province where there are more individuals who speak French. Regardless, Canada has unique dialects that will take some time getting used to. The large indiginous population and the impact the indiginous community has had on the country, as well as the proximity to the States, has also had an impact on the formation of the language. Getting used to word choices, sayings, and aphorisms may take some time, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly!
Locations
Canada is a large country. Each province and territory is unique in its own way, and you should be aware of what to expect before you choose a place to settle down. For example, if you’re looking at homes for sale in Vancouver vs. Toronto, you may want to look at the pros and cons of each area, relative to your personal situation. Vancouver has a lower cost of living, a more laid-back attitude amongst citizens, and more reliable public transit. Toronto, on the other hand, has higher salaries, a more hustling-bustling city feel, and a vibrant, diverse population. The climate can also differ from one area to another, so be sure to do your research before committing to your new home.
Diversity
Speaking of diversity, Canada is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, and is considered the most diverse of all Western Countries. This is only becoming more and more true as time passes, since many immigrants (like, perhaps, yourself!) are coming to Canada for opportunity. And, when it comes to opportunity, there’s plenty of it.
Because of high immigration, you’ll find just about all cultures represented somewhere in the country. Let’s be clear – this does not mean Canadian immigrants are free from prejudice. But, overall, Canadian citizens are extremely welcoming, particularly in larger cities where it’s easy to find representation from like-minded communities. True Canadians embrace their differences and celebrate the fact that it’s what makes this country so great.
