Everyone has their ups and downs – after all, this great adventure that we call ‘life’ sure is a colossal roller coaster. Even so, did you know that those people who lean towards nurturing a more positive mindset tend to develop fewer life threatening illnesses and lead a better quality of life?
It turns out that there are multiple physical health benefits to being a ‘glass half full’ kind of person, not to mention the obvious boost to your mental health.

“Be mindful. Be grateful. Be positive. Be true. Be kind.”
Roy T. Bennett
Our brains can be trained to re-evaluate how we react to certain situations and, with a little time and dedication, we can teach ourselves how to create and nurture a positive mindset and, ultimately, lead happier, healthier lives.
Here are 5 smart ways to nurture a positive mindset – let me know in the comments what your favourite technique is.
Practice Daily Gratitude
Evaluating your day in the evening and listing what you’ve been grateful for is a fabulous way of reminding yourself that not everything is all doom and gloom. You don’t need to have a special ‘moment’ every day, your little pieces of gratitude can be something small that made you feel happy, such as a compliment from a friend, or your significant other making a cup of tea for you. Grab yourself a notebook, or even just the Notes app on your phone, and start tracking your daily gratitudes. Tracking these little moments and looking back at them can help boost your mood, confidence, self esteem, and it’ll ultimately go a long way to creating your new positive mindset.

Spend Time Around People Who Make You Happy
Obviously there will always be times where we have to interact and be around people who bring us down – it is inevitable in life. However, the key to counteracting these negative emotions is to spend time around the people who make you happy. Positivity breeds positivity, so start hanging out with people who make you feel good about yourself and watch your new positive mindset blossom.

Practice Positive Self Talk
We’re our own worst enemies when it comes to talking down and critiquing ourselves. It’s time to stop! There’s no way you’d look at your friend and say that they look ugly and frumpy, or their body is the wrong shape for their clothing choice, so why say it to yourself? It’s time to cut out the negative self-talk and replace it with a positive alternative – for example, instead of saying “I’ve done a really bad job at that”, say “I will try that again, maybe using a different technique”. This simple technique is vital for creating a positive mindset, so start practicing your positive self talk today!

Daily Positive Affirmations
A personal favourite mood boosting technique of mine is to start your day with a few simple positive affirmations. It may not seem like much, but over time, your brain will start to accept these statements and believe them to be true. Try starting your day by telling yourself something like “today’s going to be a great day”, “I’m a likeable person and I am loved”, or “I am talented and intelligent”.

Look For The Positives…Even In The Negative Moments
Perhaps one of the most effective ways to change your overall outlook on life is to search for positives, even when it may seem like there aren’t many. Every cloud has a silver living, or so they say, and I truly believe that to be true. If something didn’t go your way, search for a positive that you can take away from it. For example, you didn’t get the job you applied for – the positive here could be that it frees you up to find something that you’re better suited for you could find a workplace that’s even better than the last.

I hope these 5 smart ways to nurture a positive mindset have helped you out and you continue to practice them. Over time, your mind will adapt and you’ll start to lead a happier, more fulfilling life.
